Toxic Ingredients in Your Deodorant

One of the things that you put on every day is deodorant. However, did you know that there are toxic ingredients found in the regular deodorant? Whether it is a stick, roll on, or a spray, it is important to know the harmful ingredients found in your deodorant.

Aluminum

Aluminum is one of the main ingredients of modern deodorants. It blocks the sweat glands to prevent the user from sweating. However, studies show aluminum can lead to serious health conditions, such as breast cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.  When the metal blocks the sweat glands, toxic materials accumulate underneath the skin. Any long-term buildup is not good for the body.

Parabens

Parabens copy estrogen and can cause cancer. The good news is that most deodorants today do not contain this ingredient, but that does not mean you should not look out for it in your favorite product.

Phthalates

These compounds help the hygiene product to stick to the skin. They also help stabilize the scent of the product. However, the compounds can build up in the underarm area over time. They can disrupt the androgen functions of the body that can lead to a hormonal imbalance.

Silica

Silica is a skin irritant. It can also contain contaminants such as crystalline quartz, which is a known carcinogen.

Triclosan

This compound is a common deodorant ingredient because of its antibacterial, anti-fungal, and antiviral properties. However, it is also a known endocrine disruptor. The body can accumulate triclosan, and researchers have detected it in the urine, blood, and mothers’ breast milk.

Propylene Glycol

Lastly, there’s propylene glycol. It helps in the absorption of sweat, which makes it the ideal ingredient for deodorants. However, studies showed that the compound has a bad effect on the central nervous system. It is also linked to depression and seizures.

These are just some of the toxic ingredients found in deodorant. You should read the ingredients of the product before buying it. The good news is that there are many safe alternatives on the market that will help you keep your armpits dry throughout the day.
