Kidney Stones

Kidney stones are made from minerals and salts from the urine. They can form small ‘’stones’’ as the grain of sand or much bigger. It is even possible to reach a size of a golf ball! Kidney stones may stay in your kidneys, or they can travel through your urinary tract. The urinary track is a system of organs (kidneys, tubes and bladder) that makes urine and carries it out from the body. While stone is moving through the urinary tract, it will cause pain and several other symptoms.

The most common reason for kidney stone forming is lack of water. Every person should drink from 8 to 10 glasses of water every day. Urine should be light yellow or clean as water. Kidney stones can also be formed when the balance between water, minerals, salts and other things in urine is changed. Some medical conditions, like gout can increase the risk of forming kidney stones. Also, you can inherit this disease. If some member of your family has kidney stones, you may have them as well. They don’t cause pain while they are in the kidneys, only when they are moving from them to the bladder. You may experience symptoms like belly pain, red or pink urine. In that case, you should go to the doctor. He will examine you, and maybe he will do an ultrasound or CT scan tests.

In most cases, a doctor will give you pain medicine and he will recommend you to drink more water and fluids. If a kidney stone is too big, so it cannot pass, there is advance treatment. It is called ESWL and it uses shock waves in order to break the stone into smaller pieces.
